HÉR OG NÚ/ HERE AND NOW

This workshop welcomes artists, photographers and filmmakers who wish to explore the natural surroundings of Seyðisfjörður, while experimenting with photographic processes directly linked to the immediate environment. Guided by visiting artist Sarah Fuller and local photographer Jessica Auer, the group will meet for daily walks and excursions, as well as practice studio-based experiments using natural materials and organic developers such as sunlight, plantlife and minerals. Together we will explore the creative potential of a landscape experience, while considering nature and place as both subject matter and means of photographic reproduction. Hands-on workshops will include phytograms, anthotypes, film soups and eco-developing. For this workshop, participants should be able to walk for up to 3 or 4 hours on uneven terrain.

 

Recommended for: Practicing artists with an interest in ecology, walking and/or alternative photographic processes.

 

Dates: May 25 - June 01, 2024 (1 week)

Group size: 8

Program fees: 180.000 ISK (Approx €1,200)

Program fees includes: 2 workshop mentors, facilities and materials, local transportation, guided excursions and midday meals. Fees do not include accommodation, however private and shared rooms have been reserved for participants at Hafaldan harbour hostel. The program fees do not include travel to and from Egilsstaðir. Participants are encouraged to obtain travel insurance.

Instructor bios:

Sarah Fuller is a Canadian visual artist and photographer who makes work about human intervention in the landscape. Currently based in Winnipeg, Sarah has been an artist in residence at Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, Laughing Waters in Nillumbick Shire, Australia, the Klondike Institute of Art and Culture, Yukon, Fondazione Antonio Ratti, Italy, and the Association of Visual Artists (SIM) in Iceland. She holds a MFA from the University of Ottawa and a BFA from Emily Carr University and currently teaches photography at the School of Art at the University of Manitoba.

Jessica Auer is a photographer and filmmaker based in Seyðisfjörður, Iceland. Through an experience-and-research-based practice, she examines our social, political and aesthetic attitudes towards place, including but not limited to – historical sites, tourist destinations, and small communities. Jessica received her MFA from Concordia University in Montréal, where she teaches part-time in the Photography department. While in Iceland, Jessica runs Ströndin Studio, an educational and experimental center for photography in Seyðisfjörður.

 

Hér og nú/ Here and Now is hosted by Ströndin Studio, a former herring fish factory that has been converted into a photography studio. Photographer-participants will be provided with unique access to this stunning fjordside location, its charming studio space, and darkroom facility.
