ADVANCED COLLODION
with Karen Stentaford

This 2.5-day advanced collodion workshop offers participants an immersive experience creating ambrotypes (positives) and glass negatives. Working hands-on throughout, participants will deepen their technical control while expanding the creative possibilities of the wet plate collodion process.

 

Designed for those with prior experience in wet plate collodion, the workshop supports experimentation, refinement, and the development of a more personal visual language within the medium.

 

Schedule:
Day 1 (half day) – Chemistry & safety, prep chemistry, clean and prepare plates.

Day 2 – Creation of ambrotypes and move into negatives, with guided check-ins and troubleshooting throughout the day. 

Day 3 – Continue creating images, varnishing and finishing options.

 

Recommended for: Artists or photographers who have previously completed Collodion Tintypes with Karen Stentaford or equivalent practice. 

​Group size: Max 8 participants.

Program fee: 85.000 ISK

Tuition fee includes: Access to specialized studios and equipment, all materials and mid-day meals. Price does not include accommodation, however rooms have been pre-reserved for participants at Hafaldan hostel at a discounted rate.

Karen Stentaford (she/her) is an artist and educator living in Sackville, New Brunswick within Mi’kma’ki. She specializes in large format photography and the wet plate collodion process. Rooted in slow photography, repetition, and close looking, her work often responds to specific geographies while fostering connections with community. Since 2013, she has engaged different communities through participatory and collaborative projects, with her Photomatic Travelling Tintype Studio. Karen currently holds the position of Associate Professor, Pierre Lassonde School of Fine Arts at Mount Allison University. She received a BFA from Mount Allison University, a BEd (Visual Arts Specialist) from NSCAD University & Mount Saint Vincent University and a MA in Photography from the Edinburgh College of Art.
