BOOK ART AND DESIGN
with João Linneu

In this workshop, art director and book designer João Linneu will introduce participants to a variety of approaches in book making and publishing. Over the course of the workshop, we will discuss conceptual strategies for each person’s project and begin to execute the design and production of a prototype. Specific topics will include concept, design, paper choices, printing and binding techniques. The instructor will work with each participant to develop their own ideas and create the initial framework for a personal artists’ book project. This workshop is open to various forms of publication, from very simple to ambitious projects.

 

Day 1 – Examples and discussion on conceptual strategies + brainstorming individual projects.

Day 2 – Discuss printing and binding techniques + follow up on individual projects. 

Day 3 – Printing, binding and experimenting. Creation of book dummies. 

 

Recommended for: Artists or photographers with a visual project suitable for publication in book form.

Group size: 8 participants

 

Program fee: 80.000 ISK

Fee includes: Book making materials for one prototype, workspace and mid-day meals. Price does not include accommodation, however rooms have been pre-reserved for participants at Hafaldan hostel.

João Linneu is a Brazilian born designer, photographer and book publisher, who is currently based in Reykjavík, Iceland. He is co-founder of VOID, an independent publishing house dedicated to photography books and education. As an independent designer, João runs, with Fernanda Fajardo, Kakkalakki — a book design studio that has collaborated with André Frère (FRA), Deadbeat Club (USA), Studio Vortex (FRA), Ed. Carnívoras (GRE), Koç Foundation (TUR), Kehrer Verlag (DEU), FotoEvidence (FRA), XYZ (POR), among others.
